The Difference Between Going After Price Gouging vs. Implementing Price Controls

While Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris has made a crackdown on corporate price gouging a centerpiece of her plan to lower consumer prices, congressional Democrats have already begun introducing legislation that would allow regulators to monitor potential market manipulation.

As Nevadans have seen prices for commodities like groceries and gasoline soar over the last few years, US Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-Nevada) says corporations have been taking advantage of consumers to pad their bottom line. But while polls show public support for efforts to address price gouging, most Americans also are against government price controls.

In a recent interview with The Nevadan, Rosen noted it will be important to educate the public on the difference between the two as she and colleagues attempt to protect consumers from tactics like so-called “shrinkflation.”

“We’re not telling them what to charge,” Rosen said. “We just want to make sure they don’t rip us off.”
