Sen. Rosen Says the Kroger-Albertsons Merger Would Be Bad for Nevada. Here’s Why.

Polls have routinely shown that affordability is a key issue for voters heading into this year’s election. In a recent sit-down interview, Nevada US Sen. Jacky Rosen explained to The Nevadan what measures she and Democratic colleagues are taking to bring down the cost of things like groceries and prescription medications.

Rosen discussed her opposition to The Kroger Co.’s proposed multibillion dollar acquisition of Albertsons Companies, Inc., which she said would eliminate competition in states like Nevada and lead to potential layoffs and higher prices for food and pharmaceuticals. Rosen earlier this year was among a group of Senate Democrats who urged the Biden-Harris administration to sue to block the merger.

“We have a really high number of Kroger and Albertsons stores here,” Rosen said. “And in some of our smaller communities, they are the only two stores. So it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that if they merge … they may consolidate. Are they going to keep all those jobs? And, you know, when you reduce competition, prices usually don’t go down.”
