It’s that time of the year, again — the deadline to file your taxes is April 15.

The IRS offers free tax filing services for individuals with an annual income of $67,000 or less and have simple W-2 or 1099 forms. If that sounds like you, here are some ways you can file your taxes for free in southern Nevada.

Mexican Consulate in Las Vegas

The Financial Advisory Resource Center at the Mexican Consulate in Las Vegas will be offering free tax preparation appointments every Friday starting Feb. 21 through April 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

As part of the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, IRS-certified volunteers will provide free tax filing appointments in Spanish.

To schedule your appointment, visit the Consulate’s VITA 2025 site.

Nevada Free Taxes Coalition

The Nevada Free Taxes Coalition (NFTC) also works with the IRS VITA program and has started offering in-person appointments, which you can schedule by calling one of their locations across the valley.

Some locations offer assistance in English and Spanish, others also in Tagalog and Chinese, and some are walk-in only.

NFTC does not prepare taxes for individuals who have to report income or loss from a business or a sole proprietor profession, SS-5 or SS-8 forms to request a Social Security Number or determine working status, or 8615 forms for a minor’s investment income.

Las Vegas-Clark County Library District

The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District is partnering with the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide to offer free tax preparation assistance at nine libraries.

The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide provides tax assistance to anyone, free of charge, but focuses on taxpayers who are over 50 years old who have low to moderate income. You don’t need to be an AARP member to use the service.

The services will be available through April 15 and are by appointment only — to schedule, call 702-381-6081.

Some of the participating libraries include the East Las Vegas Library, the West Charleston Library, and the West Las Vegas Library.

Direct File

Last year, the IRS launched the Direct File program in 12 states, including Nevada for its pilot tax season. This year, the Direct File program expanded its availability to people in 25 states to file their taxes for free on the IRS website, as long as their tax returns aren’t too complex.

The IRS said that 30 million taxpayers qualify to use the free service this year.

For Nevadans, if you lived in the state all of 2024, earned all of your income in Nevada in 2024, and aren’t using the filing status Married Filing Separately, then Direct File might be a good option.

Filing through directfile.irs.gov is simple — users are guided through a step-by-step process and asked multiple-choice questions to fill out the return. Direct File works on smart phones, tablets, and regular computers.

Despite Elon Musk, the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), stating in a tweet last week that the group funding Direct File “has been deleted,” the IRS has not made an announcement that the program is not operating anymore and is actually encouraging taxpayers to use the program this tax season.
