A $3.2 million grant from the US Department of Transportation will help fund and install electric vehicle charging stations in primarily disadvantaged communities.

Local officials have received a $3.2 million federal grant to install an estimated 185 electric vehicle charging stations across the Las Vegas area in primarily underserved communities, according to Nevada Democratic US Rep. Steven Horsford’s office.

The funding comes from the US Department of Transportation’s $2.5 billion Charging and Fueling Infrastructure grant program and is sourced from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which President Joe Biden signed into law in 2022.  As of August, more than $300 million in funds from the grant program had been awarded already, according to the agency, and the number of charging stations nationwide has doubled since Biden took office in 2021.

Horsford’s office said in a statement that the chargers will be installed primarily in disadvantaged communities at city-owned or controlled, publicly-accessible properties like parks, community centers and multi-family housing. The project also requires the city to conduct an outreach and educational campaign about electric vehicle access, charging locations and available resources.

Horsford’s office did not state a timeline for completion of the project.

“Electric vehicle charging stations are critical infrastructure to every community — they should never be locked behind a zip code,” Horsford said in the statement. “Today’s investment is about ensuring access to a clean energy source for Nevadans of all walks of life.”

The stations are expected to be built at the following locations:

  • Howard Lieburn Senior Center, 6230 Garwood Ave. (three chargers)
  • Freedom Park, 850 N. Mojave Rd. (five chargers)
  • East Las Vegas Community Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave. (five chargers)
  • Promenade Garage, 355 Promenade Place (60 chargers)
  • City Parkway Garage, 350 S. City Pkwy. (70 chargers)
  • City Centre Garage, 455 S. 3rd St. (10 chargers)
  • 500 S. Main Garage, 500 S. Main St. (32 chargers)
