The permits are available for $5 each at the Elko District office, located at 3900 East Idaho Street, during regular business hours Monday through Friday. For added convenience, permits can also be purchased online through the Forest Products website. Each person can purchase up to 10 permits, and payment can be made via cash, check, or credit card.

Tree hunters have several scenic locations to choose from, including:
- Spruce Mountain (east of Ruby Valley)
- Cherry Creek Range (west of Currie)
- Murdock Mountains (west of Montello)

- Pequop Mountains and Wood Hills (east of Wells)
- Pilot Range (north of Wendover)
- Sugar Loaf Peak (south of the Goshute Mountains)
