From a weekly farmer’s market to one of the world’s top car shows, here are 10 events you won’t want to miss this August in Reno.

Summer break is nearing an end but that doesn’t mean the end of family-friendly fun. 

August is going to be a busy month in Reno with plenty of things to do for people of all ages. Art, movies, dancing, theater, food — there’s something for everyone in the Biggest Little City.

Excited to fill up your social calendar through September? From a weekly farmer’s market to one of the world’s top car shows, here’s a look at 10 Reno events you won’t want to miss this August.

1. Midtown First Thursdays

When: August 1 at 10 a.m.
Where: Midtown

Celebrate the vibrant atmosphere of Midtown Reno during First Thursday. This monthly event for all ages is a great excuse to shop locally and support the community. Enjoy store happenings, food and beverage specials, local art, retail trunk shows, live music, and family-friendly activities. For more information, visit the MidTown Reno website.

2. Food Truck Fridays

When: Fridays from 4-9 p.m.
Where: Idlewild Park 

Life’s a picnic at Food Truck Fridays. So grab a blanket and some foldable chairs, and head to the park to stake out the perfect spot. With more than 40 gourmet food, dessert, craft beer, wine, and spirits vendors, there’s much to enjoy at this weekly family and foodie-friendly event. 3. Riverside Farmer’s Market

When: Sundays from 8 a.m.-1 p.m.
Where: Idlewild Park

Shop for locally grown and raised goods from more than 100 sustainable food and farm vendors at this open-air market and bazaar with pesticide-free produce and pasture-raised meats and eggs. 4. Flicks on Bricks

When: August 2 from 7:30-10:30 p.m.
Where: Wingfield Park

Are you feeling the need for speed? The City of Reno and Sierra Tap House present Flicks on Bricks, a family-favorite movie screening event in the scenic Reno Riverwalk District—this month, “Top Gun.” Grab a bite from a local food truck and sip on drinks at the adjacent Sierra Tap House Beer Garden. 5. The Spongebob Musical

When: August 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, and 10 at 7:30 p.m.; August 4, and 11 at 2 p.m.
Where: Reno Little Theater

Everyone’s favorite burger-flipping sponge and friends bring their crazy underwater antics to Reno in “The Spongebob Musical,” a quirky production by Reno Little Theater. Laugh the day away with colorful sets and costumes, catchy tunes, and plenty of silliness. Backstage tours are available, for a fee. 6. Dancing on the River

When: August 3, 17, 31 from 4-9 p.m.
Where: West Street Plaza

Show off your smoothest moves at Dancing on the River in downtown Reno. Fun for the whole family and free to join, this outdoor event includes food trucks and drinks. For more information, visit the Dancing on the River website.

7. Kids Arts & Crafts Club

When: August 3, 10, 17, 24 from noon-2
Where: Reno Public Market

Doodle Your Soul leads a free art club in the afternoon. There will be craft stations for kids to express creativity and make art. Adult supervision is required, and RSVP is suggested. For more information, visit the Reno Public Market website.

8. Hot August Nights

When: August 6-11
Where: Reno, Sparks, Virginia City, and Carson City

Reno is putting the pedal to the medal for Hot August Nights, a world-renowned classic car event. More than 5,000 vehicles from the ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s, and early ‘80 will be on display including hot rods and muscle cars. The five-day event also incorporates free concerts, show-n-shine competitions, nightly cruises, drag races, vendors, and the popular Hot August Nights car auction. 9. High Desert Harmony 20th Anniversary Show

When: August 17 from 3-4:30 p.m
Where: Cargo at Whitney Peak Hotel

High Desert Harmony, The local chapter of Sweet Adelines International, is presenting a free concert to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The show will feature a 40-member chorus singing four-part harmony in barbershop style. Reservations are required even though admission is free. 10. 53rd Annual Journal Jog 8K

When: August 25 at 7:25 a.m.
Where: Reno High School

Sometimes called “Reno’s Oldest Footrace,” the journal jog race is a family-friendly event for all levels of walkers and runners as well as parents with strollers. Participants will traverse a flat 8k course through scenic and historic old southwest Reno, starting and finishing at Reno High School. Afterward, there’s a finish-line party with food vendors.
