The Courtyard Homeless Resource Center has boosted its medical care for those experiencing homelessness, the elderly, residents of assisted housing and veterans in Las Vegas.

The new two-story Health & Wellness Center provides more services and space than the Courtyard’s previous clinic, including comprehensive health, mental health, and substance abuse services as well as support services like health education and counseling.

The clinic is operated by the nonprofit Nevada Health Centers and began seeing patients on Monday.

Unhoused individuals and families are at increased risk for non-infectious and infectious disease, mental illness, and alcohol or substance use disorder, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); Delayed care and lapses in care often lead to the worst outcomes.

The Courtyard Homeless Resource Center opened in 2017 and serves more than 6,500 individuals annually, according to the city of Las Vegas. The aim is to break the cycle of homelessness by providing medical, housing and employment services as well as access to:

  • Social services
  • Shower and bathroom facilities
  • Covered sleeping area for 800 guests at a time
  • Computer lab
  • Pet kennel
  • Transportation via the city’s Arrow Shuttle to agencies such as the Department of Motor Vehicles, Las Vegas Rescue Mission, Southern Nevada Health District, Salvation Army and the Social Security Office

The Nevada Current recently reported on an alarming spike in homelessness in Southern Nevada, a 16% increase over last year, based on an annual survey of one night. The count was taken earlier this year, several months before the June expiration of pandemic-era eviction protections in Nevada.

In Las Vegas, there are more than 6,000 individuals and families without permanent housing, according to the non-profit Mayor’s Fund for Las Vegas Life, which helps fund the Courtyard.

Around 582,000 Americans experienced homelessness in 2022, according to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

The Courtyard is located within the Corridor of Hope at 314 Foremaster Lane, near Las Vegas Boulevard. It is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week for anyone in need of a safe place to be or stay.

The Health and Wellness Center is open Mondays-Fridays, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed from noon to 1 p.m.) and the second Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome.
