These five stores offer some of the best piñatas in Reno, Nevada. Be sure to check them out before your next party.

Close your eyes and swing. It’s piñata time!

Originating across China, Europe, and Latin America, piñatas are growing in popularity in the United States at birthdays, Christmas, Cinco de Mayo, and other celebrations. Almost everyone has taken a swing at one of these veritable treasure chests, then joined in the hectic scramble to collect the hidden treats that spill out from inside.

Contemporary piñatas range from traditional fiesta stars and burros to well-known characters from movies, television shows, and video games. They are sold in all shapes and sizes at a handful of stores in Reno.

In addition to shopping locally for piñatas on Facebook Marketplace, be sure to check out the five following Reno stores.

Where to buy a piñata in Reno

1. Dulcería Ana

642 Eureka Avenue

When shopping at this sweet Mexican candy shop, patrons walk beneath a canopy of brightly colored piñatas hanging from the ceiling. Many of them are brand new. The shop reported on its Facebook page that it received a large shipment of piñatas earlier this month with styles including traditional, sports, numbers, and Cuban-style.

As for filling piñatas, this is a candy store so you’re in the right place. You’ll also find cookies, party decorations, balloons, natural flower arrangements, ribbons, artisan pottery, handmade fiesta necklaces, toys, and religious figurines.

2. Toro de Oro Market

588 N McCarran Boulevard, Sparks

A well-stocked neighborhood market with a butcher shop, bakery, produce and restaurant, Toro De Oro Market in the Silver State Plaza is known for its low prices, Hispanic products, fresh meals, and rare food finds.

And if you’re in need of a piñata, heads up (literally!): The store carries a unique selection of piñatas on display atop the shelves in the frozen section. You’ll find all the candy you need to fill them here too.

3. Marketon

1500 S Wells Avenue

Marketon is a large specialty grocery store with five locations in Las Vegas and Reno. Along with all the typical food items found at Latin grocery stores, the Reno location has a variety of colorful piñatas, large and small, traditional and nontraditional. The piñatas hang above the market’s produce section and checkout, creating a festive feel while you shop. You can also buy candy for your piñatas at Marketon, making it a one-stop shopping experience.

4. Party City

2825 Northtowne Lane

Party City is a powerhouse party goods retailer, located in more than 70 countries. The store has aisle after aisle of party supplies (including piñatas). Merchandise comes in more than 200 themes for all types of celebrations including birthday parties, baby showers, graduation, and Halloween. Are you seeking certain characters, you’ll find them and more here.

At the Northtowne Marketplace location in Reno, there’s a large selection of piñatas as well as the candy and toys to fill them. Or you can opt for an all-in-one kit. It comes with the piñata, blindfold, stick for swinging, and candy or toys.

5. Winco

1616 Dakota Hills, Sparks
2855 Northtowne Lane
9750 South Virginia Street

Winco is a full-service, employee-owned grocery store with 140 locations. If you’re throwing a small gathering, don’t want a large, over-the-top piñata, or you just want to grab something fast, this is the store for you. Winco in Reno has a medium-sized collection of small piñatas, and the candy to fill them. Remember, it’s quality not quantity.

What to put in a piñata

Even though piñatas are typically filled with candy and small toys, there’s no hard or fast rule.

It’s now trendy to diversify the contents with healthier, lower sugar, and non-food choices like trinkets, confetti, stickers, messages, boxed raisins, and bouncy balls; anything small that is safe for kids and won’t break, crumble, or leak.

You can also customize a piñata by party type. For adults-only parties, for instance, use age-appropriate prizes like gift cards, hair ties, and movie tickets.

If you include food or candy, make sure it’s individually wrapped!
